Root2Fruit Foundation is an NGO focused on positively impacting the education sector in Northern Nigeria. We provide scholarships to students from disadvantaged backgrounds and also fund programs that provide skills training in secondary schools. We are seeking a volunteer who can act as an administration/communication officer on a part time basis. Office space will be provided and certain expenses will be covered. The position is based in Wuse 2, Abuja.

 

The volunteer will be involved in administration and communication tasks such as:
• Preparing scholarship documentation and updating student records
• Making filings at Corporate Affairs Commission
• Registering and communicating with potential partner organisations
• Taking minutes during team meetings
• Liaising with website developers to provide content for website
• Conducting relevant research and proposing fundraising ideas
• Responding to enquiries by email or telephone
• Creating and updating social media accounts

 

The candidate should reside in Abuja and be willing to attend meetings with Foundation members. The candidate should be interested in the education sector and be willing to contribute ideas on achieving the group’s goals. The candidate should be computer literate and comfortable with using Microsoft Office programs. The candidate should be familiar with how to use different social media platforms. The candidate should be well organised and willing to show initiative in performing their duties. We expect that some aspects of the work can be done online or over the phone at the volunteer’s convenience. The assignment will be on an ongoing basis but for at least a year to begin with.

ABOUT SKILLS OUTSIDE SCHOOL (SOS) CAREERS

The SOS Careers program will offer preparatory support and guidance to students in tertiary institutions in accessing their chosen career interests. This will be through access to online courses, career simulation games/exercises, professional development training, networking events, CV and cover letter drafting skills, mock interview skills sessions and technical and soft skills training. This program will also aid in placing the participants in internships, shadowing opportunities and insight days in various industries to develop the participants’ commercial awareness and competence skills.

1st Public Art Nigeria April-May 6 sessions

Climate Change in Africa project

Partners: Recycle Points, Wecyclers, Terra Kulture

Students will work with partners to develop a theatre production about Climate Change in Nigeria.

We are looking for mentors who are creative and are available on Saturdays from 10am-5pm. They will need to participate in a training session about Youth Engagement and Child Abuse. They will receive a certificate after completing at least 3 sessions working with the youths in our program. The program will kick off from Ikeja.

Our Saturday programs run on Saturdays from 10am-5pm.

Reading with Parents program:

This program was organized for some of our students whose parents do not know how to read the English language. This program is set up for the year.

This opportunity will be offered once or twice a week for our parents and will be organized based on volunteers availability. Volunteers will be trained on how to teach reading effectively and the program will start in April; running from our Ikeja location.
All mentors/volunteers will need to learn our philosophy when engaging with our youth and adults participating in our programs – a training series is being organized for all new and old mentors. We are facilitating the first of these workshops/trainings on Saturday March 5th starting at 10am. If they should decide to stay on as a mentor after the project is already finished we would be very happy to have them.

Requirements from the mentors are:

I. VOLUNTEER CAREER ADVISER

What will I be doing as an SOS Careers Adviser?

  1. Provide information on career options from the university course you pursued

II. VOLUNTEER MENTOR

What will I be doing as a Professional Career Mentor?

  1. Provide on-going career advice to the assigned mentee/student participant before the Open Day (mandatory): In particular, we ask that the mentor aid the mentee to achieve the following:
  1. Map out future career options
  2. Map out university choices and course options
  3. Map out subjects required for the course in WAEC and NECO
  4. Map out JAMB subjects required for course choice
  5. Map out weak subjects that students require help in
  6. Internship options – date, company, location, duration etc. – you may offer internships yourself or recommend others
  7. Advice on relevant qualifications for the intended career and help with providing information towards attaining these qualifications
  8. Share experiences and guidance on what is required to become successful in the career interest including suggestions on
  9. Internships/work experience
    1. Opportunities for secondary school students in the chosen discipline/career path
    2. Extra-curricular activities
    3. Materials e.g. guides on ‘coding’ programming etc.
    4. Useful exercises to develop and cultivate their interests
  10. Attend the Career Mentoring Open Day in April 2016 (mandatory)
  11. Provide on-going career advice to the assigned mentee/student participant after the Open Day (not mandatory but recommended)

 

Time Commitment: The Foundation requests you maintain contact with your mentee at least twice every month.

Location: We welcome mentors from all over the world. We require that you attend the Career Mentoring Open Day in Abuja, Nigeria in April 2016 either in person or via Skype

  1. VOLUNTEER MEDIA & RESEARCH OFFICER

The Volunteer Media & Research Officer would find and develop relevant content for our social media platforms, monitor engagement on our social media platforms, develop and implement innovative online campaigns, write and publish press releases, feature the foundation on radio and other broadcasting platforms, design and develop email newsletters, and conduct research on the foundations activities.

If you are ambitious, have experience with social media for business, print media and are passionate about it, this is the position for you. You will learn the ins and outs of the organization to assist in making social media a productive part of our overall marketing efforts.

You must be able to think strategically and see how social media fits into the organization’s marketing strategy, not just telling our followers, but building long-lasting relationships by providing value to them. Volunteers must be able to assist in formulating social media plans (once ample information is provided to you), and then carry them out (with our assistance). You must be able to measure and document the impact of social media, and then suggest action-steps to increase impact.

Duties and responsibilities

Information about the role

  • Estimated hours required per week: 5-12 hours a week
  • The estimated duration of the role is12 months
  • This position is Virtual. However, the officer will be required to attend team meetings and attend the organisations events including the Career Mentoring Open Day and the Inter-School Competition as well as skills workshops in Abuja.

  1. VOLUNTEER TRAINERS FOR THE HEADSTART PROJECT
The HEADSTART project is an educational support and career development project aimed at getting secondary students prepared for the tertiary education system and the entirety of their career phase by enriching them with the skills and tools to manage the demands of the present age tertiary institutions and the labour market.

The target beneficiaries are Senior Secondary Two to Three students. Each class cohort is a maximum of 20 students. The senior secondary school two to three students who enroll on the project will be taken through various stages of training both theoretically and by practical demonstration on skills and personal development initiatives that will empower them to successfully finish their secondary education, prepare them for tertiary education and make them fully endowed personnel in their chosen field of study/career of interest and/or empower them to be employers of labour.

The HEADSTART project will commence with a recruitment for student participants in December 2015. Registration and confirmation of places are expected to be completed in January 2016 with sessions commencing in the second week of January 2016. The duration of the program is 2 months between January and end of February 2016 with the option for a summer workshop commencing in July 2016

NEW OPENINGS!!!

The UR4Africa program in November and December focuses on Tech & Health and it is in partnership with tech companies in Lagos. Kids would be taught how to make apps that will teach people about health topics and awareness around diseases such as HIV/AIDS, Malaria, Typhoid, Obesity, Cholera, etc. The program begins November 7th and ends December 19th.

 

We have two programs:

1) Fridays from 2pm-5pm

2) Saturdays from 11am-4pm

 

Volunteers mentors are needed for these projects. Volunteer mentors will be required to attend training workshops October 24th and October 31st. Trainings will most likely be from 10am to 2pm.

 

Requirements from the mentors are:

– Be present while mentoring

Volunteer at RAR!!!

Recycle Articreate is a platform for children and youths to express creativity & art with the use of recyclables. They promote the use of recyclable materials such as wrappers, cans, plastics, papers, nylon, etc to create something useful, decorative or simply artistic. It would also promote the ‘Keep Lagos Clean’ initiative as recyclable materials are properly disposed, recycled and kept for future purpose such as this.

Their Recycle Awareness Rally (RAR), organised in partnership with LAWMA, Virgo Int’l travels, Pharmareach Pharmacy, Jidafric Realtor, and Sycamore Construct, is a platform for creating awareness and sensitizing the community about recycling in our environment. In addition, youth participants will develop knowledge about recycling and how they can benefit from it as well as improve the lives of people in their communities.

The Rally would hold on Friday, 18th of September, 2015 in the City of Ikeja, Lagos (Nigeria).

Prior to the rally, however, a pre – RAR Program would take place at Ikeja on the 11th of September, 2015 for preparations.
