Free Summer Program details 
Date: August 7 – September 9th, 2017 (week days)
Time: 9am – 1pm
Classes: Basic 1 – 9
Location: Market Street, Ebute Metta, Lagos state, Nigeria (popularly know as ‘the beach’)
Volunteers need to be 18 and above and this is an unpaid volunteer position. The free summer lesson Volunteer serves as a coach and mentor to children who will be attending the project organized by the Dream Nurture Foundation. You will be supporting the mission of the organization, which is giving educational opportunities to despondent children.

Key Responsibilities:

·         Takes part in fun activities organized for his/her class.

·         Answers questions the children in his/her group may have.

·         Be able to notice changes in the children, especially those who are doing really well.

·         The volunteer supports the children in his/her group and help boost their self-confidence.

·         The volunteer gives the children opportunities to boost self-reliance and capacity building

·         The volunteer needs to be prepared for each lesson day and have a time table handy.

Reports to: Program Director or positioned representatives in times of his/her absence.
Requirements:  SSCE School leaving certificate. You should also be friendly, reliable, trustworthy and have good communication skills.

Support:  The Program Director/ Assistant will be available for questions and assistance. The volunteer will always receive ongoing support from the Agency.

Openings at SOS Foundation

Please find below details of two new openings for Abuja residents only. Kindly take note of the requirements for the roles, and follow the instructions to indicate interest. The roles are volunteer positions with all business and out-of-pocket expenses covered by the foundation.

 

OPENING 1: PROGRAM DATABASE DEVELOPER

BACKGROUND

The Program Database Developer will support the development of a robust research database for the SOS Careers Program and manage the presentation of coherent analysis and reports within the SOS Careers Program office. The Officer will be expected to have basic capabilities in conducting robust research and analysis largely independently, and sometimes under the guidance of colleagues. The analysis will  be displayed in a report format or compelling graphical form using Microsoft PowerPoint or similar applications.

SCOPE OF WORK

Research and Data Gathering

  1. Researching Education requirements for various careers and industries
  2. Developing a list of universities and available courses across the US and UK including entry requirements, number of years, brief description of the course, information to support applications
  3. Aggregating sample curriculum vitae (CV), cover letters, application answers, motivational statements per industry/career
  4. Aggregating sample interview questions per industry/career and general interview and job search strategies and techniques
  5. Aggregating information on internships/insight days/work experience/IT provided by various organisations across various industries including the dates, timing, application cycle, application process etc.
  6. Identifying relevant qualifications to be pursued across various industries
  7. Identifying various workshops on career planning, development, skills development offered in Nigeria
  8. Identifying scholarship opportunities at home and abroad for undergraduate and post-graduate degrees
  9. Collecting and collating career and labour market information
  10. Respond to new areas of research as provided by the SOS Careers Program Manager as being relevant for the target cohort of tertiary institution students
  11. Developing list of potential HR advisors, consultants and agencies
  12. Conducting scoping studies on all tertiary institutions in Nigeria
  13. Developing list of potential partner organizations for internships and insight opportunities
  14. Developing list of careers advisors, speakers and experts

Analysis and Data Presentation

  1. Developing infomercials that depict the action plans required to advance in career decisions
  2. Presenting data in a graphical, pictorial and succinct forms
  3. Managing a database of information on excel
  4. Writing short pieces on various industries/careers
  5. Writing more detailed analysis on various industry trends

Other

  1. Monitoring and optimizing the performance of the SOS career database
  2. Planning for backup and recovery of database information
  3. Maintaining archive data and reports
  4. Maintaining and Updating an educational opportunities database on a daily basis  – scholarships, essays, competitions, workshops etc. relevant for the careers students.

OPENING 2: PROGRAM MARKETING OFFICER

SCOPE OF WORK

  1. Conduct research and advice on best approach to engage potential Headstart participants
  2. Advice on pricing and incentive strategies to enhance program marketability
  3. Develop, implement, manage and oversee online and off-line marketing campaigns for SOS Headstart
  4. Develop, implement and report on surveys conducted on target audience across various states in Nigeria for program deployment
  5. Manage and disseminate SOS Headstart online content diary
  6. Source for partnerships with media outlets and develop press releases, ads and other relevant marketing material to be displayed or released on these media outlets
  7. Manage stakeholder database
  8. Identify and collating information on viable tapped and untapped industries for business
  9. Identify and negotiate partners with agencies, MDAs, trainers, mentors and other stakeholders to partner with
  10. Support program officer with curriculum development
  11. Aggregate and on-board SOS Headstart business mentors and trainers
  12. Source for stakeholders to provide seed capital awards
  13. Collate report on program performance statistics in terms of responses and participation

Volunteer Mentors for a Recycling & Environmental Education Project

UR4Africa is working on a project with two recycling companies in Lagos and a phone app company based in New York. They would be engaging students who will be learning about recycling August 25th and creating illustrated stories for an app on recycling on August 27th -judged by the reps from the recycling companies. The app will be free for people to download to help spread the awareness of Recycling and Environmental Education. They require volunteers for this cause. The students and volunteers that worked with them will be featured as authors and illustrators on the app.

Key locations involved are Yaba and Ikeja, Lagos state and this will take a 2 day commitment. A bus will pick everyone from a designated station. Lunch and snacks provided.

Volunteers would be responsible for engaging a group of about 6 students each, be enthusiastic about the work they are doing and be willing to share and brainstorm ideas. They would be required to maintain a positive cheerful attitude with the students and be firm. They do not need to draw but have to be open to thinking outside of the box, being creative, and working with a team.

Volunteers who are great children instructors, are based in Lagos at this time, and available on August 25-27 are welcome.

New Openings-Tech Needs Girls

The Tech Needs Girls project aims to encourage more girls to venture into STEM fields particularly ICT, bridging the ‘Digital Divide’, improving the quality of education in Nigeria and as a result reducing the poverty level in the country.

Its objectives are:

  • To scout for girls that are interested in STEM fields
  • To increase digital literacy in young girls in Nigeria
  • To increase female involvement in the creation of ICT solutions in Nigeria
  • To create a community of highly competent female coders who can create secure & sustainable livelihoods

 

WORK DESCRIPTION

Project Officers are required to carry out these three basic and specific tasks:

  1. Train the girls on digital literacy
  1. Train the girls on coding
  1. Serve as a Monitoring & Evaluation Officer

Asides these fundamental duties, the Project Officer may be required to carry out other duties all relating to the project such as logistics support and public relations.

 

Person Specification

The Project Officer must:

  • be willing to live in Minna, Nigeria under basic conditions, (electricity and running water will not be constant)
  • be passionate about the development of the girl child
  • have strong skills in at least one of the following: software programming, mobile app development and website designing.
  • be able and willing to raise funds
  • have strong teamwork skills
  • be able to commit at least 6 months to the project
  • be able to fund their travel to Nigeria (for volunteers outside Nigeria)

Openings at UKF!

United for Kids Foundation is a not-for-profit organization incorporated in the USA, Nigeria and the United Kingdom established exclusively for charitable and educational activities targeted principally at needy children in Nigeria. They have reached more than 40,000 children with programs like the annual ‘Back to School’ project and free libraries in 9 public schools within Lagos since 2002

They need volunteers to commit 30 hours each week working with children from low income families in Lagos public primary schools. Volunteers will be assigned to their libraries at Ojodu, Somolu or Victoria Island. Library hours will be from 8am to 2pm on Mondays to Thursday while Fridays will be for debriefing and professional development.

 

The volunteers will work with their staff to implement literacy programs in the libraries. They will read to and with the children during library periods. They will watch educational programs with the children and explain content to them. The volunteers will also lead various projects such as tie and dye, planting, coloring and painting. They will accompany pupils to field trips, which include movie theaters, banks, museums, manufacturing companies and other major establishments during the annual summer camp. Volunteers will act as first line mentors to children, many of whom are from socially and economically disadvantaged homes. Volunteers at our Victoria Island library will work with mentors from major corporations once a week to implement a special reading program using eReaders (kindles).

 

REQUIRED ABILITIES

Volunteers should be university or polytechnic graduates with excellent oral and written communication skills. We are looking for people with good attitude who are willing to invest their time in helping economically disadvantaged children.

Saturday volunteering opportunities!

VolunteerCorps (VC) education programme teaches Mathematics, English and LIFE (Leadership, Information, Finance and Ethics) issues to senior secondary school students in public schools in Lagos and Ogun State. The students attend the weekly Saturday tutoring (while schools are in session) where volunteers from various fields come in to tutor them. These volunteers also serve as role models to the students. This is done every term and starts from 10am-12noon or 12-2pm on environmental Saturdays.

Volunteers are expected to commit to teaching every Saturday throughout the term for an hour minimum. They are expected to be:

Openings at StayInSchoolng Initiative

The StayInSchoolng initiative of Young Minds Foundation is an education intervention project aimed at creating education opportunities for orphans and vulnerable children. It was established to reduce the number of out-of-school children in Nigeria. Initiated in November 2012, the project currently supports 200 disadvantaged children with primary school education across 4 communities in Lagos and Abuja.

Volunteers are required over a period of three months to help with assessment of new children to be enrolled into the initiative. Minimum time commitment is 2 hours weekly.

Volunteers must have ability to interact and work with children, great interpersonal skills and be good team players.

 

Work involves:

Visits to children in identified communities in Lagos – Ijora Badia, Ejigbo and Idoluwo Ile.

Assessing the children with the agreed assessment index; and

Working on a football fundraiser event in October
