Medical outreach this Saturday!

As part of her Corporate Social Responsibility initiative, PathCare would be holding a free medical outreach at Yaba, Lagos, on Saturday, August 1, 2015, from 9 am – 6 pm. Last year, they reached up to 1,500 people with free medical tests and other services.

They are poised to do better this year and need volunteer doctors, nurses and other individuals to help out with general coordination. Dress code is casual.

Volunteer Trainers at SOS Foundation

The Skills Outside School Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation registered in Nigeria and the UK. They require volunteers for the bridge project. The Bridge Project is a free employability skill building and career mentoring scheme for bright, disadvantaged and motivated senior secondary school one and two students in Government Secondary Schools in Nigeria. 80 students in total are currently enrolled in the project. The project is deployed as an after-school activity currently in three partner schools and includes skills workshops, career mentoring sessions and competitions.

Start date: January 2016

Duties of volunteers

    1. Selection of the Participants using the provided set criteria for evaluation
    2. Coordinating the 5 skills workshops for 20 participants
    3. Coordinating the mentoring sessions with the participants and writing up a progress report which must be submitted to the Project Coordinator
    4. Administering the robust skills workshops and mentoring sessions evaluation framework
    5. Aiding the students brainstorming session for the Inter-School Competition
    6. Managing the Applications process for external opportunities for the students
    7. Supervising Monitoring and Evaluation post project end

Other duties:

  1. The design of the 5 skills workshops – the selection of the techniques to achieve the goals and the steering of group processes.
  2. Understanding the participants and the workshop content prior to planning the workshop.
  3. Following a step‐by‐step process to clarify assumptions and focus the workshops on the specific objectives of the sessions.
  4. Making adjustments to the workshop design—structure and learning activities—as needed for the situation.
  5. Sharing first‐hand practical experiences with the participants to extend their learning and understanding.
  6. Leading follow‐up and evaluation of the learning, collecting feedback on the event and tracking learning, during and after the workshop.
  7. Providing additional examples of concepts and case studies to guide and support participants’ learning.
  8. Attending the Career Mentoring Open Day and acting as an usher for the event

Qualifications

  1. A university degree in any field.
  2. Previous experience in training or facilitating workshops, events, sessions etc. (this could be part time, as an intern, as a volunteer or full time role).

Skills Requirement

  1. Presentation – communicating ideas, using visual and other aids, giving feedback, listing skills
  2. Facilitation – managing activities, eliciting contributions and learning, creative and innovative thinker, ability to create an atmosphere of confidence among participants.
  3. One-to-one – coaching, counselling, mentoring, advising, assessing.
  4. Consultancy – investigating, advising, evaluating.
  5. Design – designing activities, e-literate, knowledge of group development, including the ability to sense a group’s mood and change methods or adjust the program on the spot.
  6. Interpersonal – building relationships, ability to handle conflict, trust in other people and their capacities, respect for the opinions of others, does not impose ideas on others, adaptable.
  7. Assertiveness – confidence, challenging and supporting.
  8. Expertise and Interest – knowledgeable, insightful, up to date, enthusiastic about being a trainer.
  9. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint).
  10. Proficiency in cloud software applications (Skydrive, DropBox, Google Docs).

 

Time Commitment: 4 HOURS A WEEK (MINIMUM), 8-10 HOURS A WEEK (MAXIMUM); REQUIRED BETWEEN 1.30-4.30PM ONCE EVERY TWO WEEKS

Latest Weekend Volunteering Opportunities

VolunteerCorps (VC) education programme teaches Mathematics, English and LIFE (Leadership, Information, Finance and Ethics) issues to senior secondary school students in public schools in Lagos and Ogun State. The students attend the weekly Saturday tutoring (while schools are in session) where volunteers from various fields come in to tutor them. These volunteers also serve as role models to the students. This is done every term and starts from 10am-12noon or 12-2pm on environmental Saturdays.

Volunteers are expected to commit to teaching every Saturday throughout the term for an hour minimum. They are expected to be:

The tutorial centres are located in Amuwo Odofin, Apapa, Ikeja, Lagos Island, Surulere, and Yaba Local Government Areas (L.G.A.) in Lagos state; and in Obafemi-Owode L.G.A and Owode-Egba at Ogun state.

New Openings-Tech Needs Girls

The Tech Needs Girls project aims to encourage more girls to venture into STEM fields particularly ICT, bridging the ‘Digital Divide’, improving the quality of education in Nigeria and as a result reducing the poverty level in the country.

Its objectives are:

  • To scout for girls that are interested in STEM fields
  • To increase digital literacy in young girls in Nigeria
  • To increase female involvement in the creation of ICT solutions in Nigeria
  • To create a community of highly competent female coders who can create secure & sustainable livelihoods

 

WORK DESCRIPTION

Project Officers are required to carry out these three basic and specific tasks:

  1. Train the girls on digital literacy
  1. Train the girls on coding
  1. Serve as a Monitoring & Evaluation Officer

Asides these fundamental duties, the Project Officer may be required to carry out other duties all relating to the project such as logistics support and public relations.

 

Person Specification

The Project Officer must:

  • be willing to live in Minna, Nigeria under basic conditions, (electricity and running water will not be constant)
  • be passionate about the development of the girl child
  • have strong skills in at least one of the following: software programming, mobile app development and website designing.
  • be able and willing to raise funds
  • have strong teamwork skills
  • be able to commit at least 6 months to the project
  • be able to fund their travel to Nigeria (for volunteers outside Nigeria)

KOM is here again! Volunteers needed

The Kick out Malaria (KOM) is a signature program of The Iba – Malaria Eradication Foundation and is designed to commemorate the annual UN World Malaria Day. Since 2002, the project has reached hundreds of thousands of people and has been implemented in 5 communities in Lagos State. It has been sponsored by Exxon Mobil, Red Cross Society, Lagos State Ministries of Health and Environment, The Nation Newspaper etc. The program has also won local and international awards such as the National Youth Service Corps Awards, SET Africa Awards, and the Commonwealth Youth Awards (African Section). It has been attended by the US Consul General, Mr. Jeffery Hawkins and will be attended by members of the German community this year. The project involves distribution of Long Lasting Insecticide Treated Nets, Environmental Clean Up Exercise, distribution of anti-malarial drugs, education of community members and/or installation of waste bins.

This year’s program will hold at Abule Oja, Yaba on April 25th. It will start by 7am (because of environmental sanitation exercise) and will end by 2noon.

 

Volunteers are needed to participate in all the stages of the exercise. There will be a prior meeting to talk about duties in details. Capable people passionate about community development work who can be committed are needed.
