Openings for Career Advisers and Professional Mentors

The Skills Outside School Foundation is a registered not-for-profit in Nigeria (IT73040) and the UK (09365183) providing employability skills training, career mentoring and development, education building services and scholarship opportunities to disadvantaged youth at secondary and tertiary level in Nigeria.

 

I. VOLUNTEER CAREER ADVISER

What will I be doing as an SOS Careers Adviser?

  1. Provide information on career options from the university course you pursued
  2. Submit a Sample CV and Cover Letter for your industry
  3. Submit sample or frequently asked Interview Questions in your industry
  4. Provide advice on writing winning CVs and Cover Letters
  5. Provide links and suggestions to useful websites or materials for Psychometric Tests
  6. Provide profiles on organisations in your industry and the recruitment process
  7. Provide suggestions of internships in Nigeria
  8. Provide Information on universities in Nigeria, registration process and other aspects of university experience
  9. Submit your university course module information, lecture notes, projects, papers and other materials
  10. Provide information on relevant qualifications and ways of successfully attaining these qualifications e.g. ACCA for accounting
  11. Share experiences and guidance on what is required to become successful in your industry
  12. Provide information on extracurricular activities at university that can be beneficial to support students in building competence for your industry e.g. AIESEC Club for future development practitioners
  13. Provide information on how to balance social life on campus and academics
  14. Share useful revision techniques and reading plans
  15. Share useful information on time management and task prioritization
  16. Share useful tips and information on proposal, project report, thesis, dissertation writing
  17. Become a ‘go-to’ expert on industry trends

Location: We welcome advisers from all over the world

Remuneration/Reimbursable Expenses: None

Requirements:

  1. A tertiary degree in any field
  2. High performer or achiever in any field
  3. Minimum of 2.1 grade at undergraduate level or a combination of at least 2.2 at undergraduate level and a postgraduate degree
  4. Minimum of 2 years professional working experience in any field or 2 years running a successful business/enterprise/not-for-profit/partnership
  5. Expertise and Interest – experienced, insightful, up to date, committed to building young people and enthusiastic about being an adviser

 

 

II. VOLUNTEER MENTOR

What will I be doing as a Professional Career Mentor?

  1. Provide on-going career advice to the assigned mentee/student participant before the Open Day (mandatory): In particular, we ask that the mentor aid the mentee to achieve the following:
  1. Map out future career options
  2. Map out university choices and course options
  3. Map out subjects required for the course in WAEC and NECO
  4. Map out JAMB subjects required for course choice
  5. Map out weak subjects that students require help in
  6. Internship options – date, company, location, duration etc. – you may offer internships yourself or recommend others
  7. Advice on relevant qualifications for the intended career and help with providing information towards attaining these qualifications
  8. Share experiences and guidance on what is required to become successful in the career interest including suggestions on
  9. Internships/work experience
    1. Opportunities for secondary school students in the chosen discipline/career path
    2. Extra-curricular activities
    3. Materials e.g. guides on ‘coding’ programming etc.
    4. Useful exercises to develop and cultivate their interests
  10. Attend the Career Mentoring Open Day in April 2016 (mandatory)
  11. Provide on-going career advice to the assigned mentee/student participant after the Open Day (not mandatory but recommended)

 

Time Commitment: The Foundation requests you maintain contact with your mentee at least twice every month.

Remuneration/Reimbursable Expenses: None

Location: We welcome mentors from all over the world. We require that you attend the Career Mentoring Open Day in Abuja, Nigeria in April 2016 either in person or via Skype

 

Requirements:

  1. A tertiary degree in any field
  2. High performer or achiever in any field
  3. Professional and Academic Track record
  4. Previous experience in mentoring (this could be part time, as an intern, as a volunteer or full time role)
  5. At least18 years
  6. Strong Interpersonal Skills – involving ability to build relationships and ability not to impose ideas on others
  7. Ability to coach, counsel, mentor and advise
  8. Strong Communication Skills – especially the ability to give feedback and listen
  9. Expertise and Interest – experienced, insightful, up to date, committed to building young people and enthusiastic about being a mentor

Mentor’s applications are assessed on individual basis with particular attention given to one’s track record and values such as honesty, integrity, and expertise or achievements in one’s field of endeavor.
